Lisa Reading with her Dad as a baby

Lisa Hulett, owner

Lisa grew up in a family of readers who enjoy visiting bookstores and libraries. Lisa is an attorney with a background advocating for children in the foster care system. She founded Sammy’s Bookshelf with the abundant support of her family, friends, colleagues, and fellow book club members. The roots of Sammy’s Bookshelf started with her parents. Their love of reading continues to transcend through new generations.

Who is Sammy?

Sammy’s Bookshelf was inspired by a sculpture titled “Girl Reading” by Dennis Smith. Her new family lovingly named her Sammy, and together their passion for reading inspired Sammy’s Bookshelf.

Sammy represents the reader in all of us and envisions a world where visiting the bookstore is just as engaging as a screen. Video games, social media, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence are here to stay. That’s okay. But there is space to discover the magic of reading, too.

Books can reconnect us with the child in all of us. Childhood is naturally rooted in storytelling and imagination. The decreasing interest in reading and the increasing focus on electronics is chipping away at this experience for both children and adults. It takes a community, but we can reenergize the reader inside each of us. Bookstores are the cornerstone of a community and can create this environment—let’s come together to read, talk, and problem solve. Rekindling the child-like imagination in us all is worth it.

Sammy's Mission

Sammy’s mission is to match kids with characters and stories they love. Expanding home libraries is key to increasing literacy with our youth. Books, reading, writing, and storytelling are critical tools for a child’s development. Did you know there are health benefits associated with reading? Plus, READING IS FUN!

For kids who don’t have a place to call home—Sammy’s Bookshelf is working to bring books and other supports to you through our community partnerships. All children should have access to the magic that lies within the pages of a book.
